Judy Newland: Exploring the Meaning of Textiles Through Time and Place
Through textiles, we can explore art, society, politics, religion and more, making connections between cultures and through time. Textiles surround and swaddle us from birth to death, a part of the social fabric, bringing meaning to our physical, emotional and spiritual lives. The stories of our lives can be told through textiles. Culture and history can be explored through the study of textiles. Cloth is part of our past, present and future. Join Judy on an adventure using natural dyes, material culture, landscape and travel to explore textiles through time. Her presentation will begin at 6 pm, with our business meeting to follow.
Judy Newland is retired faculty in museum anthropology at Arizona State University where she served as the Director for the ASU Museum of Anthropology. She has worked in the museum field for over 20 years at a variety of university museums, including art and anthropology, specializing in the design and development of exhibitions and teaching museum courses. A weaver, spinner, and dyer for over 40 years, she concentrates on weavings that spring from cultural ideas and process. Her research includes archaeological textile fieldwork in Peru, weaving in the Southwest and indigo dye processes and cultural practices around the world. She has blogged about textiles for WARP (Weave A Real Peace) and ClothRoads and continues to occasionally blog on her website, clothgirl.com
TREADLE’S BLEND, CARD, SPIN, DYE PROJECT - "TONES"
This year’s Guild project will begin with a focus on the two beautiful electric carders the Guild owns.
The idea is to each have 4 oz. of black fiber [in our case it will be true natural black alpaca, and 8 oz of white wool, [again, in our case, lovely soft Falkland].
We want to make a soft grey mix and a darker grey mix, of the two fibers. So a small amount of the black blended and carded with maybe half of the white to make the light shade. And a larger amount of the black blended and carded with the rest of the white to make a darker shade. Amounts are up to you, but you definitely don’t want to have a super dark grey as your darker blend.
Then spin as you want, ply as you want. Don’t mix the blends. You will need two separate colors of grey.
Next May or June, Treadles will have a dye day with 4 or 5 or maybe more pots of color with which to dye your spun yarn. Both light grey and dark grey will go in the same dye bath to give you “Tones” of the same color.
Two or three get togethers will be scheduled thru the year as “carding days” to bring your fiber and card up your fibers.
Still to be decided on is when and how your skeins will be mordanted. You’ll have plenty of notice.
FIBER: True Black Natural Alpaca 4 oz
White Falkland 8oz
Both will be ready to work with.
The cost will be about $40 for the 12 oz of fiber.
The Guild will provide all dye materials plus mordanting materials.

2. Red Scarf donations for 18 year olds “aging out” of foster care need to be delivered by December 1 to a location(s) TBA.
The Foster Care Distribution Center accepts donations from September 1 thru December 15 annually.
Drop off locations for the Snuggles or Red Scarves will be announced at the September meeting.

Tineke will be sharing a not-for-profit organization’s journey with the Drentse Heideschaap, the sheeps’ history, products, and jobs in addition to the cultures Holland’s sheep helped shape. A one ounce Drentse Heideschaap Touch Sample will hopefully arrive for pick up prior to her presentation for a Spin Along. If not we’ll enjoy the fiber afterwards and provide feedback at the next meeting. We’ll keep you posted.

Master weaver and spinner Norman Kennedy kept an old fashioned scrapbook from the time he was a teenager (born 1933), collecting images of spinners and weavers from around the world. Melissa began her study with him at the Marshfield School of Weaving in Vermont in 1980.
